Must-try Halal Food in Osaka

Halal food in Osaka is getting easier to find as more halal restaurants sprout around this popular Japanese city. It makes Osaka a great destination for muslim travellers. The best part is that most of these restaurants serve Japanese food, so muslim travellers get to savour different types of the local cuisine like sushi, ramen, shabu-shabu, snow crab, takoyaki and even Japanese fine dining fit for a king.  

Below are some of the must-try muslim-friendly or halal food in Osaka in the popular tourist areas like Dotonbori, Namba, Shinsaibashi, Osaka/Umeda, and Universal Studios.

Dotonbori & Namba

One of the main attractions in Osaka is Dotonbori and the areas around Namba.  This bustling town area is known for its bright lights, huge Glico man, and lots of shops and eateries.  Muslim visitors have a number of choices of halal food around Dotombori/Namba area.

1. Tsuki no Odori 

Tsuki no Odori is a Japanese restaurant that is all about chicken. We tried the miso pot and salt pot as well as Chicken Yakitori. It is located along the popular walking street in Dotonbori.

2. Ayam-Ya

Ayam-Ya serves delicious ramen with chicken-based soup. This budget-friendly restaurant takes orders via a vending machine.

3. Bulls 

If you are a meat lover and enjoy shabu-shabu and sukiyaki, then Bulls is the perfect choice for you. Unlike the two above, Bulls is located within the JR Namba train station itself.

4. Ramen Honolu 

Ramen Honolulu is a small Ramen eatery about 10 min walk from JR Namba station on a quieter street. It is a budget-friendly option that is quite popular amongst Muslim locals and visitors. However, there were only very few seats available. We gave up waiting outside in the cold after 40 minutes as there were still a number of people queueing before us. I suggest to go there when they just open for lunch or dinner.

Shinsaibashi

Shinsaibashi is a short walk from Dotombori and is also a popular shopping area in Osaka. There are a variety of halal food options in this area.

5. Minokichi Shinsaibashi

Minokichi serves traditional Kyoto Kaiseki cuisine. It is said to be the origin of Japanese cuisine. They have muslim-friendly lunch set, and a multi-course dinner set with either fish or beef shabu-shabu. Advance booking is required.  See the menu here.

While in Shinsaibashi, you could buy Halal certified souvenirs and other Muslim-friendly products on the 8th floor of Daimaru Shinsaibashi, 1-7-1 Shinsaibashi-suji, Chuo-ku, Osaka-shi, Osaka. 10:30-210

Universal Studios

Universal Studios Japan is a popular attraction in Osaka, especially for The Wizardry World of Harry Potter. Within the park, you could try the non-alcoholic butter beer and seafood at Amity Landing restaurant.

You could also head to Matsuri which is just 2 train stops away on the JR Yumesaki line.

11. Matsuri

Matsuri is a small Japanese diner serving ramen, sushi and Osaka’s favourite, takoyaki. Osaka is the birthplace of Takoyaki and you should try it once while you are in Osaka. What’s cool is that Matsuri lets you cook your own takoyaki. It also sells uncooked halal Japanese ramen that you can bring home. Matsuri is near to Nodahanshin station that is about 5 stops from Osaka-Namba.

Near Osaka /Umeda station

If you are around Osaka /Umeda station visiting the Umeda sky building, the Pokémon centre or just shopping, you can find halal / Muslim-friendly restaurants at two hotels:

Tennoji

15. Uemachi 

About 3 train stops away from Namba is Tennoji station where you can experience Japanese fine dining at Uemachi located within Sheraton Miyaki Hotel.

16. EU Sheraton Miyagi Hotel also has another restaurant called Eu that serves halal buffet breakfast.

Osaka Airport / Premium Outlet

There are three places where you can find halal food in Osaka airport.  You might want to consider eating at one of them if you are heading to Osaka’s Kansai Airport or the Rinku Premium Outlet (10 min by shuttle bus from the airport).

Accommodations near Halal food in Osaka

If you are looking for hotels to stay in Osaka where you don’t have to step out of the hotel for halal food, then try the following hotels:

• Sheraton Miyako Hotel (serves halal food at one corner of their breakfast buffet)
• Hilton Osaka
• Hotel Granvia
• Hotel Nikko Osaka
• Dotonbori Hotel (breakfast for hotel guests only)

Other great options would be to stay in the areas around Namba, Dotonbori and Shinsaibashi with the most variety of halal food. If it is not budget-friendly enough for you, then stay within a few train stops away. We stayed at Wafu Ryokan Uehonmachi which had budget-friendly and very clean accommodations for families up to 7 people. It is also conveniently located within walking distance of the Uehonmachi train station. They were also able to handle baggage deliveries to and from Tokyo or any other places in Japan.
